NEW YORK, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Hip-hop culture and controversy have always made for familiar bedfellows. Yet, in the wake of the Imus controversy and in a year when the genre's sales have tumbled, hip-hop finds itself under an exceptional amount of scrutiny and pressure -- and the stakes have never been higher. BET NEWS takes a powerful and compelling look at the state of hip-hop today in a three-part series titled HIP HOP vs. AMERICA. Hosted by BET's own Toure and Jeff Johnson, this special showcases a candid, heated forum that will allow audiences to hear the opinions of prominent leaders in the hip-hop industry, the political realm, academia and the Black church.

  • I think its an important issue to discuss the impact of hip hop records and the vivid imagery that follows the genre. But its not more important than other genres; what about Lady Gaga and the obsession with satanic imagery in her videos, or the sexsual contents of Rhianna lyrics. They both have a bigger crowd, what about the consequences of that?

Can we get some media responsability, politics and awareness from the big networks that promote these artist, movies, videogames, (c)reality shows!

"Calling me an alien, big headed astronaut. Maybe it's because your boy Yeezy get ass a lot"

Yup. The substance is just oozing out of his lyrics.

  • @justforthelulzzz Get the fuck outta here with that bullshit, Kanye will kill your favorite rapper in a lyrical battle. You can't have every album go platinum and not be blessed lyrically. Most people say kanye can't rap because hes not talking about guns, he has substance and something to talk about.

  • oooh black people

  • this is just media trying to talk about the media, but it's from an "analytical" perspective. They should just get to the point and root of things. What's to say their opinions aren't biased...the rapper's themselves don't seem to be able to speak for themselves for some reason...Hmmm...

  • @mogatsamasego

Dude, really, shut the fuck up. Intellect isn't based on schooling, and I guarantee that most of these rappers have a better vocabulary than you. Maybe not Nelly and T.I but most of the good ones like Tupac, Ice cube, and many of the member from the wu tang clan could tare any of these suckers up in a debate.
