Wallace was a real progressive in power -- a remarkably rare thing in US politics. We may have the UN, but still no universal health care or end to US imperialism as he wished.

Simple answer: Wallace was a social democrat living in a country which had and has no public--and likely minimal--support for social democrat politics.
