Anyone who doubts Toscanini's genius should listen to his You Tube version of a 1944 version of the overture to Verdi's "La Forza del Destino". Yes, it's fast --- faster than any I've ever heard, but its the most electrifying thing I've ever heard. The strings are like whirling dervishes and the horns peal forth like thunder. What a shame he never recorded the whole opera with Zinka Milanov, Richard Tucker, and Leonard Warren. They would have sung like gods for him and we'd all be richer.
