Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini (1867-1957) was almost as well-known for his fiery temper as he was for his music. This November 26, 1953 audio tirade during a rehearsal with the NBC Symphony Orchestra of "Dance of the Water Nymphs" from Alfredo Catalani's opera "Loreley" gives an indication how he acquired his tyrannical reputation.

  • Anyone who doubts Toscanini's genius should listen to his You Tube version of a 1944 version of the overture to Verdi's "La Forza del Destino". Yes, it's fast --- faster than any I've ever heard, but its the most electrifying thing I've ever heard. The strings are like whirling dervishes and the horns peal forth like thunder. What a shame he never recorded the whole opera with Zinka Milanov, Richard Tucker, and Leonard Warren. They would have sung like gods for him and we'd all be richer.

  • @SteveAndrewLangford Toscanini says: "Corpo d'un D... santissimo", "Madonna s..." A very heavy blasphemy toward God and holy Mary. It's very heavy even for a street person. It should be better not to transcript nor translate, actually.

  • @SteveAndrewLangford Actually he swears against God and the Madonna.

  • I believe he hated Mussolini because he didn't want any competition!
