Hubert Sumlin, but I am sure he would like the comparison. It seems pretty likely that he was friends with Lightnin'. Hubert is a notoriously nice guy.
Yes, it's a cool story, but it is the product of a Hollywood writer's typewriter. That "legend" came from the movie "Cadillac Records," a very good movie by all accounts, but using a fake "legend" to describe the scene that features Wolf in the studio doing "Smokestack Lightning." It is nothing more than a Hollywoodized retelling of the legend of Robert Johnson and the Crossroads.
No disrespect to Wolf, though. Wolf didn't NEED any legends to make him the blues Godzilla he was.
Hell yes! the Newport 1966 footage. He just wails away, going into a kneeling position, grinning widely, having a great time. Bottleneck was where he really showed his stuff, and Patton was an incredibly sophisticated bottleneck man, even though the poor quality of his old recordings makes it hard to hear.
Were there better guitarists? Of course...Hubert, his own axe man, for one. Were there better singers? Of course...Son House, to name one, probably the greatest singer of ANY music. But Wolf had that something extra, that 'X' factor. That something was PRESENCE.

We sure do hope so Wolf.
