Excerpts from the Society of Professional Journalists event in
Minneapolis examining the role of journalists at the RNC, where as many as 50 journalists were arrested covering protests. Here, The UpTake's Chuck Olsen helps the panel define citizen journalism and affirms that The UpTake's citizen journalists are engaging in journalism. St. Paul's Deputy Mayor Ann Mulholland is tentative but appears to agree. Finally, Dave Aeikens, president of the Society of Professional Journalists, agrees The UpTake's CJs are journalists. He further states that if a journalist is breaking the law they should be arrested, but that journos should be allowed to do their jobs at protests.
Holy shit, the unseen(?) speaker in the first half of the video is being a total dick. He sounds like the disapproving chancellor in the mock trial scene at the end of every single college movie, who is secretly in league with the antagonist fraternity. He uses douchey disapproving language to try to assert that only people who have assimilated into the established bureaucracy can do what they do. I hate that. I hate him. Arg.
