The Barrens, from Stephen King's novel "It." It's such a favorite with King buffs, that the city built a walking path through the wooded area along Kenduskeag Stream. In the story, the sewer pipes here are used as an entrance to a monster's lair. King fans take note: not even municipal infrastructure improvements can remove the eerie feelings of dread you had while reading the book. Remember how you worried for the kids? admired their bravery? and cheered them on? Tap into that, and you may swear that you caught a glimpse of a red latex floating through the trees.

Shot on a trip to Maine in the summer of 2007. On a whim, we drove almost three hours from where were staying in Kennebunkport so we could tour Stephen King's Bangor. Where our fav author got a lot of inspiration for, and based many of, his stories, such as It, Thinner, Bag of Bones and The Langoliers.

  • The Standpipe? I have footage of that too, and photos. The footage is here on my YouTube channel and the photos are on my MySpace and Facebook accounts.

  • i actually meant the big square building. Remember where the 7 of them make the promise beside the lake, and then they walk into that scary building, down the "barrel" hole... its like an old steel mill or something, and its where henry bowers follows them in... its the dark gloomy building overlooking the lake, at the end of the stream where they made the dam. hope that made sense.

  • hmmm...now I'm going to have to read the book again! I think I read it about 18 years ago and that building isn't ringing a bell in my head. When we visited in August I didn't see anything like that- but that doesnt mean it doesnt exist. It's not on the unofficial "tour" map, we went to all those places. So, King could either have invented it or based it on another building.
