The brilliant send-ups (which fooled many) by husband & wife team Paul Weston and Jo Stafford continue with this off-key rendition of the classic.

Also available here are "Moonlight Bay", Silvery Moon" and "I Am Woman" - horrendous masterpieces, all three!

  • I'm looking for a song by Darlene / Jo that had the line "And when no one is nigh, you cry". Anybody know the name of this song? It's awful / hilarious.

  • @casestudyification

The name of the song you are seeking is "Sophisticated Lady".

It is available here on YT, sung by various people (Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughan, etc) but not the Jonathan and Darlene version that you ask for.

I don't have that either....it must be on one of their other LPs.

  • The art of singing out of tune on purpose is knowing just how far to go and these two have it down to perfection. Another 2 degrees more and it would be unbearable but they keep it just within the realms of perfection.

  • @splottydizzy

They are/were brilliant - impeccable timing.

Nothing like them since, so they are to be treasured.

  • @hcrun Thanks for the info! You should hear "Sophisticated Lady" by Darlene Edwards sometime if you can find it. It's a riot!

  • I love this. They played it so straight, with such a light touch! It's utterly hilarious. You know the old saying: Dying is Easy; Comedy is Hard. These two made it seem effortless. But non-musicians don't seem to enjoy the humor so much, they're usually appalled and embarrassed to hear it because they don't get the joke. They think it's for real! Bwah-haaahh! Giggle-snort!

  • @splottydizzy I played piano for the San Diego State theater Jerome Kern musical, and a cast member baptized me into J & D in about 1965. I was On the Floor, unable to breath the rest of the evening. Years of wicked fun, putting it on, in a stack of LP's on the changer, and Waiting for people to start Registering What was That?? People would say, "y'know, they're not very good.." things like that. meanwhile, I was incontinent. prize possession, a signed 45 rpm from Jonathan he sent me. jib

  • agree with splottydizzy. I am a violinist with a sense of humor. Thank god a nurse too. Most people I play J&D for strangle on their own spittle. Ah music. Calms the savage b..........!

  • Oh God - and years before Bill Murray! And as for the song, there's also the Spike Jones version!

  • well really now.....just what more could one possibly want? I think that 'cocktails for two' embodies all that is fabulous about their collaborative genius.

  • Genius.
