You're correct. He is lip syncing this performance; in Soul Train's early days, artists actually performed live. Check out performances by James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and others. It is obvious they were perfoming live. I don't know why they changed the format though.

Someone asked what Maxwell sang earlier that day...it was Ascension....yes, he had a white outfit similar to this black suit he is wearing in this video. And yes, he looked good in both! One of my fondest memories was being in that studio that day and saw him talking to Don Cornelius R.I.P. DC....

Sorry but they say the Great Pharoahs of Egypt did dine on the Hog. Both my lovers from La, producers, were of the Chinese Astrological Sign the Pig...I had no idea., but ready to marry just one man, I thought it wise to create a meat, called sum-som., the Maxwell got up from his table and sang right down the lane. Certainly the ingredients were fresh pink salmon and whole ground meat, put together for a Wedding i was to have.....Should have stayed home.

I love Maxwell but I think he was lip syncing mainly because the song sounded just record, every note, every oooo and ahh. And Maxwell isn't one to do it by the record. I don't think he wanted to though.

@Silawn It was explained in a Soul Train documentary that VH1 airs from time to time, but I can't recall what the explanation was.
