This is a video of a stalagtite organ that plays instead of pipes, by using rubber mallots that strike various stalagtites throughout the caverns. Our first visit to Luray Caverns in Virginia. The song played is an old Gospel called:"A Mighty Fortress is our God"

  • OMG! sry but ur camera sucks... get a cannon or something:P that noise is extremely annoying and the quality is pretty bad :( but besides that AWESOME VID! IF YOUTUBE DIDNT CHANGE, I WUD STILL GIVE 5 STARS!

  • @MarshalBeard Thanks...yes I know the camera is awful...thank God we got a new one....perfect quality vids, so I'll be taking it next adventure we go on :)

  • That's a very interesting idea. I have to say though, that "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" is not a gospel tune. It is a wonderful hymn of the Lutheran church written by Martin Luther himself, and has been the hymn that the Lutheran church has for centuries rallied around. Not exactly gospel in style...

Other than that, that's very, very interesting! Does it have some sort of damping mechanism that stops it from ringing?

  • thank you for explaining! Yes, there is a damping mechanism. thanks for watching : )

  • Thanks!!! Glad you enjoyed it, we sure did....

  • LOL...yes, the camera makes an irritating noise, unfortunately....thanks for the comment!!!!

  • I think the sponsors should be calling this a stalactite carillon (the definition of "bell" is more flexible that that of "organ pipe").

I shudder to think of how tuning is controlled -- they wouldn't sculpt ancient stalactites to the necessary dimensions required for the desired tunings, would they?

  • that cowbell is way off beat. : /

  • Amazing! I've never even heard of this "natural organ". I could make out;A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD....WOW! I know those stalagtites have been there a looooooong time, but...do they ever melt? The sound went from bright to deep grumbling. Nature can be absolutley WONDROUS! Thanks!

  • cool

  • Very neat.
