Lync essentially is software, like Skype or MSN. You can also buy phones that connect by USB to your computer so you can use Lync in a more conventional way. So you can use it normally as you would a phone, but it also allows you to chat and video phone and multi-video conference or multi audio. If you have Lync running from a computer you can also enable screensharing so the other caller(s) can view what you are doing on your computer. We have it installed at my workplace. It's great!
