(St. Elias Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church--video by Maria-Lynn Turi)) Near the end of the Divine Liturgy, Father Roman cuts three locks of hair from the newly enlightened Nikolai Szczurko's head. This is an expression of gratitude from the child, who having received an abundance of blessings through the Mysteries of Baptism and Confirmation and having nothing to give to God in return, offers part of its hair, which is symbolic of strength (see Samson in the Old Testament). The child, therefore, promises to serve God with all its strength. In the words of Fr. Schmemann, the cutting of the hair is a sign that the life that now begins is a life of offering and sacrifice. (http://www.babamim.com/orthodox_baptism) You'll see Father Roman offer the first cuttings to Our Lord, burning them in the candle that burns before the Saviour's icon (try doing that in a parish that uses Noma lights!)
The Faiththful continue w/ "Blessed be the Name of the Lord", an arrangement Father would have known as a child growing up in Ambridge, Pennsylvania.
