My 1991 MR2 Turbo has an intermittent problem that results in horrible acceleration. As you can see in the video, the turbo spools up yet acceleration is severely limited. The gas pedal is floored almost throughout the video (no, it's not normally this slow!). You'll see the car buck a little during shifting and acceleration. Sometimes restarting the car fixes it, others it does not. Sorry about the quality (both of the recording device and driving/filming skills).

  • thats why u use stock bypass valve. if BOV, then make sure its a good one. cheap bovs are for 140hp shitboxes :)

  • @briinums It is the Synapse BOV, which is generally considered a good one. I just got unlucky, it got gunked up... if it happens again, I know it was something bad actually running through it, if this never happens again, it was just a one-time-thing. So far about 4 months (a full 'season' considering when this happens) of no problems.

  • @AndrewZorn

oh, then it must have been a total brain wash for you when seeking for the problem as you wouldnt expect a synapse failing :D did they give you a free replacement?

  • @briinums I didn't expect a new anything to be the problem... and like I said, it got gunked up somehow, it was cleaned and works perfect now.

  • Pretty sure I've FINALLY fixed this...

The blowoff valve, which WAS REPLACED, was getting stuck.

3 months of hot weather since the fix and I have not had even a hint of this issue.

  • The pros are now saying it is timing, but timing that is frequently messed up due to *some* problem with the ECU. Found out an EEPROM wasn't properly seated, that didn't fix it.

i acelerate and it gives turbo lag only 10 psi's

and i dont get alot of power

plzz msg me if u fix this

ill msg u if my mechanics find the problems

    thanks!

  • Hey there Andrew, i'll give you the head's up on Mr2's.... All the answer's given to you are most probably right but all the answer are wrong !!!! The main intake hose from ur Air Flow meter to turbine is most probably britalled it's way off after replacing it with the K&N filter, if that hasn't been damaged in any way it will be your Air Flow meter..... That's why your car is running toooo Rich..... that's why you are also getting rpm surging..... AIR FLOW METER !!!!!

  • can i make a suggestion?,replace your turbo with an original TRD one.i had one of those and its cool.now i have a replaced turbo which puts out 200hp or something

  • You could have needed a new clutch because if your clutch is worn out or there is basically no clutch plate left that it would cause the clutch to slip so bad you can floor it and it doesn't to much of any thing.
