New President of the Rome Film Festival Gian Luigi GL Rondi attends the Fondazione Cinema per Roma press conference at the Auditorium on July 11, 2008 in Rome, Italy. President Rondi presented Rome Film Festival new rules.
It's A FESTIVAL FOR A NEW VISION.
Last year the festival red carpet was brightened by some of the most welcomed stars in the world such as Nicole Kidman...For the opening gala night/Lions for Lambs: Robert Redford was very welcome also as the acclaimed Sundance Film Festival founder, and Tom Cruise his co-star in the film, just to mention a few among the one who attended the Festival in ROME in Octobre 2007...Internationally acclaimed film critic Gian Luigi Rondi took the reins of the Rome Film Festival on Thursday (june 12 2008) wishing the 2-year-old event would get a new identity thanks to his life-experience skills, that would bring an identity distinct from Venice Film Festival, and to boost both its market and its ties with the local industry.
GL Rondi said "I am honoured by this appointment and I hope I will be able to accomplish the task in the best possible way", was Rondi's opening statement at a press conference June 12. He then added: "The 2008 edition of the Fest is already at an advanced stage", explained Rondi, "I will make my proposals for 2009: I am very interested in Italian cinema and the national film industry's relationship with the authors, additionally I would also like to expand the film market". Rondi continued, "the Rome Festival should aim for entertainment that meets the audience, while safeguarding quality. I will present the Fondazione's Board of Management with a plan to re-launch the cultural aspect of cinema and the art of the actor". He concluded by saying "I am in favour of the red carpet, but only for the leading actors and actresses in important films".

GianLuigi Rondi is a former Venice topper and head of Italy's David di Donatello Awards, replaced Goffredo Bettini, a leftist pol who stepped down after Rome elected the right-wing mayor Gianni Alemanno.

Outgoing president Goffredo Bettini also spoke highly of new president Rondi. "My love of cinema started by reading his books", recalled Bettini, "he is very a competent and prestigious figure but also a gentleman. He can count on my support at any time".

"Venice represents the art of cinema. Rome should leave art to Venice and sustain quality entertainment compatible with audience consensus," GL Rondi said while the knight was wearing his trademark white scarf, at a packed press conference in the festival's Auditorium Theater recently, in June.

Sitting next to him, the new mayor Alemanno had thrown the festival as a handout to Hollywood during his electoral campaign... But Alemanno told the press that he had changed his mind, and what made him change his mind and support the festival instead , was a recent interview in which Venice mayor Massimo Cacciari urged him to scrap it. Rivalry between Rome and Venice has been constant since the Rome festival's inception.

As for Hollywood, GL Rondi made it clear he doesn't want to tone down the glitz, saying, "Stars have always been an integral part of festivals." He certainly proved this right while being Director and then President of Venice Film Festival for many years.

GL Rondi's rapport with Hollywood has always been of the best. Hollywood best movies were brought back to the Lido/Venice when he was Venice's artistic director between 1983 and 1986. And then he proved the concept right while being its president between 1993 and 1997/99.

GL Rondi said he would announce more details of his vision for the festival's future after the Oct. 21-31 edition 2008, about which he had little to say since "the ship has already set sail." or shall we better say "the plane is about to take off to reach for the firmament brightened by the most beautiful stars!".
After the first two extraordinarily popular editions with the public, the Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma will be back from October 22 to 31, 2008 with films, retrospectives, meetings, exhibitions, concerts and major international stars.
