  • This aria, along with the recitative that follows, is one of the most sublime pieces I've heard.

  • Gorgeous

Thank you for the advice. I didn't know Gurney's music. This is beautiful artistry ! One almost never hears that kind of British music on Swiss, French or German radios, the ones I listen to where I live. And Rolfe Johnson is a tremendous artist that I have always appreciated a lot.

  • Well... sometimes 'actual' musicians can get bogged down in technical details and perhaps they could do with getting 'carried away' a bit more! There is a beautiful song by Ivor Gurney "Down by the Salley Gardens" sung by Rolfe Johnson on Youtube and I do advise you to track it down if you are a fan - the most heavenly singing imaginable.

I agree with you that Gardiner and Rolfe Johnson are absolutely superior to Belder and Schoch. I am a great fan of Gardiner and have bought almost all his recordings. Still, the voice of Schoch in the Trauerorde catches me in a very sensuous way that I can hardly explain. One might think he has got a cold, nevertheless I get carried away... To be honest, I am not a musician, only a music-lover. So I am probably not critical enough.

  • I can cope with 'not perfect' but not with Schoch, I'm afraid! Well, Gardiner's was the first recording I heard of BWV 198 so I had nothing to compare it with. If I'd heard another first perhaps I would be more troubled by the speed taken. Anthony Rolfe Johnson is one of my very favourite singers, so this does bias me, also.

Schoch's voice might not be perfect, but I like the tempo very much. Gardiner's recording is definitely high quality but somewhat too rapid.

  • This is a beautiful tenor aria, but I am not fond of Knut Schoch. He sings in a very monotonous way, and doesn't seem to have much control over his voice in the higher reaches. There is a recording with Anthony Rolfe Johnson singing this under John Eliot Gardiner which really does bring tears to your eyes.

  • This is awesome!
