Sept 3, 1898. Edison Manufacturing Co.
Camera: J. Stuart Blackton and / or Albert E. Smith

Schley's flagship at close range, returning from action in the Spanish-American war in Cuba showing shot hole in the middle of funnel, near deck. She flies a frayed and tattered battle flag.

The Spanish-American war took place from April 25 to August 12, 1898. Spain and the United States fought over Cuba, and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean theater, as well as combat over The Philippine Islands, and Guam in the Asia-Pacific theater. The four month conflict finally ended in the Treaty of Paris with Spain relinquishing sovereignty over Cuba and ceding the Philippine Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam to the United States for the sum of $20 million.

  • FYI: I think on your video of the Texas at grants tomb, you mentioned this was the USS Brooklyn on this film. This ship is one of the Battle ships, not the cruiser Brooklyn, the title is referencing the the naval parades location (new york Harbor) in 1898. the brooklyn had protruding sponsoons for it's side guns, none on this films ship. this is the Iowa,Indiana ,Mass. or Oregon.
