The Today Show on MSNBC did a short piece [indirectly] on the AWARE Study on September 28th, 2009. Dr. Sam Parnia appeared on the program to discuss their methodology, and a few U.S. hospitals involved in the study were revealed.

Anecdotal evidence from a few people who went through near-death experiences was also featured in the program, though in the end, it was all a bit too fleeting. At least it keeps the conversation going, and people thinking about the nature of consciousness.

Here is the accompanying article, including a link to the original video: http://bit.ly/8bYX5

More on the AWARE Study from http://www.mindbodysymposium.com:

The AWARE (AWAreness during REsuscitation) study is the first launched by the Human Consciousness Project and is led by Dr. Sam Parnia, a world-renowned expert on the study of the human mind and consciousness during clinical death, together with Dr Peter Fenwick and Professors Stephen Holgate and Robert Peveler of the University of Southampton. The team will be working in collaboration with more than 25 major medical centers throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States.

During the AWARE study, physicians will use the latest technologies to study the brain and consciousness during cardiac arrest. At the same time, they will also be testing the validity of out of body experiences and claims of being able to see and hear during cardiac arrest through the use of randomly generated hidden images that are not visible unless viewed from specific vantage points above.

The AWARE study will be complemented by the BRAIN-1 (Brain Resuscitation Advancement International Network - 1) study, in which researchers will conduct a variety of physiological tests in cardiac arrest patients, as well as cerebral monitoring techniques that aim to identify methods to improve the medical and psychological care of patients who undergo cardiac arrest. The studies are being funded by the UK Resuscitation Council, the Horizon Research Foundation, and the Nour Foundation in the United States.

  • science knows nothing about the mind..

  • Science is still exploring the mind. The nature of consciousness is within another paradigm of science, one that the mainstream hasn't quite reached just yet...

But I applaud scientific skepticism and doubt. It may seem close-minded, but it is these rigorous standards for evidence that are effectively delivering us from the madness of religion and barbarous superstitions.

  • an update would be nice but think about it, would he be on tv talking about the study a year into it if they were not getting any positive results, judging from what I hear about him and his book, he is not talking about himself when he says "most of us believes it is in the mind", the results will show amazing things, but will be discredited for bs technicalities like other studies

  • These sort of studies do seem to suffer from 'the moving goalpost', as it seems.

But as long as the public has an appetite for BS like the private life of celebrities, I sometimes doubt that this will get much press either way : p

Not really. I'm just Tiger Woods-ed out right now...

  • @anewpersonalparadigm do you believe in the nde? also religion is not madness it is how you perceive it. people kill in the name of christianity but it doesn't say anywhere that jesus gave permission to murder. he even said all who take the sword would perish by the sword. jesus even if you don't believe was the son of god was still a good man who taught compassion to one another. he even saved an adulteress by telling those without sin to cast the first stone.

  • An update from croydon hospital:

“We have had a number of people who suggested they have experienced something, but we have not had anyone who has seen the picture that is facing the ceiling. "

guess that is the end of it folks, bummer....

  • @ericjungleboy Fascinating. Definately not "hell" like I would've pictured it. It will be very interesting to see what the results of this study end up being, although I have an idea what the results are going to be already.

  • @ericjungleboy jesus is lord god is real heaven and hell are real . I dont know what else to tell you .

  • @ericjungleboy your a self iself-righteous phony your so fake

  • @evesdrop1982 Yes, but not hell like most people think of. Just darkness and abandonment. They report personally feeling and experiencing the pain and grief they caused others, and they can't advance until they have come to terms with it.

  • @MrChrisjack26 Based on your tone, I doubt you've had the enlightenment of knowing this personally because anyone who's had an NDE comes back with feelings of patience and kindness for others and doesn't go around calling people dumbasses.

  • haha human beings are so stupid um life after death is real folks its not your fucking braon having a allusion its sad doctors are so fucking ignorant to the fact the soul lives on regardless of what their dumbasses think they cab do

  • LOL......we're discussing probably the most earth changing events and information of all time.....but, sorry, we need to go the commercial.
