This is a video of a crop duster approaching my house from the east and going underneath the power lines before pulling up to miss my barn.

  • Glad to see some good folks are willing to give this guy the credit he is due. Pause the video at 49 secs to see that his plane is BLOCKING the view of the power pole on his left! Now how could that be if he wasn't UNDER the power lines? I don't need any hours of flying time to see this undisputable reality .. geeesh people!

  • The plane clearly flew OVER the powerlines.

  • Not true - on the original video which is much clearer, we were able to pause just as the plane crosses under the power line. You cannot see the pole because the plan blocks it BELOW the power line.

  • One more for over the line. he starts to pull up at least 100' before the line. I too have been under the wires and this was clearly not. I think this plane is bigger than alot of people realize. thinking the plane is the size of a supercub creates the illusion that he is closer....and lower than he really is.

  • There is no debate, he went over the lines. 1) He starts the pull up well before reaching the end of the field. The procedure for pullups after going under wires is to start the pullup well after the tail has cleared the wires. 2) The poles are on the opposite side of the road as the field he is working. There is no reason to go under in the first place. 3) for the guy saying that the air tractor is blocking the pole: if it was , he would be in the wires. Trust me, I do this for a living.

  • Met a crop duster pilot in a FBO while filling up the rental Cessna 172 i rent and we got to talking. turns out they wear a helmet because they crash very often and have lots of nicks on the prop from hitting power lines. he said to me as he was leaving "remember son there is a lot more room over the power lines than under'em"

  • @cobrachoppergirl Oh, it's rather simple actually? Really? You approach this just like landing?....I'm going to guess NOT a pilot? Unless you are flying something that requires a power on approach and high approach speed, and requires you to fly an almost flat glide slope mere feet above the ground all the way in, how is this like landing???

  • Flying a Crop Duster is a very dangerous job. It takes a highly skilled pilot with lots of training to do it.

  • Its rather simple actually, you simply make an approach just like landing, and other than making sure you will clear them, you tune out the lines or the bridge from your mind. Your focus is on being level with the ground at X altitude and simply pass under them level to the ground as if they weren't even there. Now, the WRONG WAY TO DO IT TO GET YOURSELF KILLED, is to look at the space you have to pass through as a RECTANGLE BOX. You may go through the target box, but hit the ground past it

  • I have to agree, He was not even close. He cleared those lines with no prob. I grew up waking up to the distinctive sound of crop dusters and the smell of their spray. I have watched them fly all of my life. I do have to say I have watched them fly under the wires though. and those pilots, are in my opinion some of the best flyers, for sure. I enjoyed the vid. thanks for posting.

  • they guy I saw in Boise always cleared the lines - by about 4 ft, but he did fly over them.

  • Oh my goodness. That pilot is out of his membrane, in my opinion; he could have cut those powerlines and ignite that barn with a dozen of roasted chickens for Thanksgiven to take home to!!!

  • Your all wrong, he cut the lines with his laser cannons. Thus clearing a path for his flying machine and than narrowly missing the barn! He is amazing!

  • he went over the lines! my dad used to do this all the time! no big deal for those pilots
