Combustion of Methanol Alcohol

The whoosh bottle is a neat demonstration to show flammability, expansion of gases due to combustion, and also shows how a rocket works. 20 ml of methanol is injected into a 5 gallon water cooler jug and allowed to turn to vapor. Light the top and keep away! Its cool!

good question. The opening of the bottle in this demo looks just like a rocket cone. This is what funnels the expanding gas and makes it leave at high speeds. We have set this bottle on its side and shot the bottle down the hallway as a land rocket.

The demonstration needs to be done with a stick that can release the flame without having to tilt the flame into the container. Their hand almost received a severe burn if you watch again. You'll also notice that as they pulled their hand away the stick almost knocked the bottle over in their direction. Lots going on here that could add up to a catastrophe. Please be careful.

Methanol on a race track has an invisible flame. I had wondered if it created visible light in the dark. Figured it would be blue. The beginning of the combustion process reminds me of the cryogenic rocket engine.
