Starting with Philip Johnson's acclaimed IDS Tower in 1972 (which is still, perhaps, one of the best looking skyscrapers in the country) Minneapolis has seen architecture play an increasingly important role in the fabric of the city.

Recent buildings by Jean Nouvel, James Dayton, Frank Gehry, Cesar Pelli and Herzog & de Meuron, as well as classics by Minoru Yamasaki & Associates, Gunnar Birkerts and Ralph Rapson, are making the City of Lakes also the City of Architecture. This video surveys some of the buildings that have transformed the cityscape as a result of the city's considerable investment in its skyline.

John Comazzi, a University of Minnesota Architecture professor, guides us around these Minneapolis landmarks, revealing some of the more interesting architectural details, facts and marvels. We start at the Walker Art Center's new addition by Herzog & de Meuron and conclude, fittingly, backstage at the new Guthrie Theatre building designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, who had this to say about the project: "At the heart of the city, the Guthrie is a machine for capturing and radiating the enveloping vistas. It condenses the landscape that unfolds around it."

  • Best city in the midwest.

  • @N1CKF3D Minneapolis is the most clean an urban city can get. Minneapolis is a great city, entertainment options are literally endless with things to do every single night. There are a few neighborhoods where you wouldn't need a car to live that remind me a lot of NYC and SF neighborhoods. We're also building more light rail lines.

  • the weather in minnesota is actually really nice even though people say it is almost the coldest place you can go, it is pretty warm because one time we got up to 115 degrees but it is rare to get -0 temputatures

  • @N1CKF3D

I think I remember reading somewhere long ago that Minneapolis is one of (top 5?) the cleanest cities in the United States for how large it is but don't quote me on that. The weather during the spring, summer, and fall is awesome in my opinion. The winter time is dry, it does snow a lot, but I don't think it snows nearly as much as New York, but either way subzero temperatures aren't rare. We're far enough north from "Tornado Valley" so natural disasters are pretty unheard of

  • I have a few questions. How is the weather in Minneapolis? And how clean is it? It looks like a literal utopia compared to where I live in NY right now...
