I took lessons from Todd about ten years ago, I still remember everything about his excellent instruction methods, I stopped playing shortly after, but I am going to start again, P.S. he's also a nice guy....Thanks Todd, Formerly from Port St. Lucie- Andrew
@Suckaaahhh you have a great point here, most drummer i see dont do this, but STRETCH!!! search up Tony Royster Jr.'s stretching methods, it really helped my playing and speed!
Another practice is to use different sized sticks from +1size of ur normal size/ regular sticks/ thinnest playable chopstick-like sticks you can find/ and play each set on a pillow.
Instead of playing fast, practice playing as slow and as possible using only ur wrists while at the same time be in full control of every movement in each lift & drop of the stick. This helps me to build up strength and control. But dont practice if your wrists start to hurt or if you're playing a gig in a few days.
I am not the greatest at blast beats but maybe I can offer some advice. I don't use my writsts as much as I am using my fingers. I grip it very tightly with my thumb and index but leave it loose throughout my other three fingers. I only brace it the stick with my middle fingers so it maintains control. Gripping it tighter allows for quicker bounces just keep it close to the head and keep the hits even, no accents and it will sound good. Hope that helps.
