On February 22, 2008, Ranger, the most powerful supercomputing system in the world for open science research, was dedicated by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin.
Sun supplied the hardware architecture for the machine, which is a cluster of many computers spread over more than 80 racks of computing space. Two Sun high-speed switches tie the whole thing together into a single computer that takes up about 4,500 square feet of floor space.
