This song does reference the tale of the Little Mermaid, but not the Disney one. It is far closer to the original story by Hans Christian Anderson, in which the mermaid experiences horrific pain in her feet whenever she tries to walk, and in which the princes ends up with another girl.

@goldfishinaglass I did the same thing today! Except it was banana I had written my name on "Hannah" and A Cannon by Regina Spektor I sang..one lady came up to me and asked me if I needed help and I cracked up laughing and said no and she walked away 0_o
