80istWithoutBorders - What is this obsession about people writing their own songs? She's a singer, not a songwriter. Not everyone can write original material. Lots of performers can write original material, but not many can write good quality songs. This is the reason we get so many singers performing their own songs that are rubbish.
Dusty Springfield wrote very few, Tom Jones wrote none, but their strengths were in singing, not writing.

She definitely is!! I've seen her in concert, and she was superb. She seems a really nice young girl as well.

That is the pop chart. She got to number 4 actually. Not bad for a classical artist. Of course you forgot to mention the following fact. 6 consecutive weeks at number 1 in the classical charts. She is at present at number 2. Not many cracks there then. I'm sorry if you think that I am hyping her up, but I prefer to let the facts speak for themselves. It seems though that those who choose to slap her down are allowed to do so with impunity. My opinion is a s valid as yours.

On her album, "The River of Light" is a song written for her, set to the "Blue Danube". Also Bjorn Ulvaeus wrote new words to "The Way Old Friends Do", especially for her. And Jon Cohen wrote a new arrangement of "Amazing Grace" for her.

If i were Simon i would demand that at least during the finals, the songs ought to be original, no copycatting. Young artists get but negative criticism due to comparisons. If Faryl Smith or Susan Boyle come up with a totally new song, no comparison can be made and the song and singer are judged by their unique performance.

I saw Faryl Smith performing with Katherine Jenkins at the MEN Arena on Thursdsay 18/12/2008. She was INCREDIBLE!! What an amazing talent. She will be releasing her first CD in the new year, which is good news. Thank God that there still is some REAL talent in the world. Go, Faryl!!
