The Grand Showcase of Martial Arts was held one evening during the first International Tai Chi Chuan Symposium at Vanderbilt University in July of 2009. It was truly a remarkable event, a display of great martial arts skill. While it was intended for the Grandmasters of Tai Chi Chuan to perform in their individual styles, it also contained the performances of some world-class martial artists demonstrating their skills in Tai Chi Chuan and other internal martial arts.

The event was held at Vanderbilt Universitys Blair School of Music Auditorium to a full audience. The show, emceed by Master Nick Gracenin, included the performance of the Center Directors of the International Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan Association displaying the first section of the 49 -movement demonstration form. This was followed by a team of five very young local students from a Nashville school of martial arts who beautifully performed a version of the Yang Style 24-form, for which they only had a few weeks to prepare. World-class martial artists Masters Su Zifang, Helen Wu, Nick Gracenin, and José Johnson did stunningly beautiful demonstrations of Baguazhang, Tai Chi fan, Liang Style Yi Chuan and Liang Style Xiao Yao Shuai, respectively. Dr. Yang Yang made things very lively by encouraging the audience to perform Interactive Qigong before his demonstration of his Evidence-Based Tai Chi routine, akin to Chen Style Tai Chi Chuan.

The performances of the Tai Chi Chuan Grandmasters followed, starting with Chen Style. There were several performances by Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei and his disciples, which included solo and group demonstrations of hand forms, push hands and weapons. This was followed by Traditional Yang Style, with Grandmaster Yang Zhenduo performing the 13-posture hand form, followed by his grandson and disciple, Master Yang Jun, who performed a variation of the Traditional Yang Family hand form, and Grandmaster Yang Zhenduos disciple Master Song Bin performing the Sword form. Next, Wu/Hao Style Grandmaster Wu Wenhan performed the styles hand form. Wu Style Grandmaster Ma Hailong performed the styles hand form, made all the more striking because he performed it in complete stage silence. His disciple Master Wang Chong performed the Styles sword routine. Last but not least, Sun Style Grandmaster Sun Yongtians disciple, Master Zhao Wei performed the styles short hand form. The show ended with Grandmaster Sun Yongtian making a demonstration of his styles two-person form and push hands with Master Zhao Wei.

Of note was the performance of Master Yang Jun, who had just been anointed as the 5th lineage holder of the Traditional Yang Style of Tai Chi Chuan at this very Symposium.
