Melle's Hog Pen Made of Logs

The hog's fondest wish...

O to be a fine, fine hog
And live amidst such beauty
To not be seen as such a ham
But to be called a cutie
And have a house as grand as this
And be served bread and wine
Alas! It's just a dream for me
Because I'm only swine

This is a hog pen made of hand-hewn logs (circa 1870) located in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia in the valley below my house.

This video was made specially for Melle de Boer of the John Dear Mowing Club, and it was developed after FanVanMel left a comment on my video entitled "Authentic 18th and 19th Century Log Cabins." The following comment was left by Ilse on February 21, 2008: "This vid inspired Melle to maybe do a series of paintings of log cabins. -Don't know if he really gonna do it, but if he does I'll upload some picts on YT. Greetings from Ilse ~member~ "

:) He has too many ideas for the amount of time in the day... :) It is fine. I did get some lovely shots of the pen in the snow this winter. Will have to do another video for him... maybe perk up his interest a little. Suze xx

Thanks so much, Michael! This video always makes me smile. I drive past this hog pen every day heading out to work... and always think of Melle and other friends when I see it. I'll put you right there on the list. :) This little house was covered with snow today..... air conditioned hog pen.... lol

It was standing about four years ago, wouldn't know it was a hog pen, someone told me, and uh, it's under the shade, cool, intriguing, by a creek and moss over everything, LOL.

Hello to the MossMan... somehow I missed your comment and wow, what a nice one it is!! Is the rock wall fence still standing? That would be very very cool to see, even though the pen is gone. I know where exactly three of these old log pens for hogs are. I think they should be on the National Register of Historic Places .... :)
