http://mamanatural.com The Hib vaccine protects against Haemophilus Influenzae Type B. It is administered at 2, 4, 6 and 15 months. The PedVaxHib brand vaccine skips the 6 month dose since it is stronger.

What is the disease?

Hib is a bacterium that is transmitted through an infected person's cough, mucous or saliva and can cause illnesses such as common cold symptoms to blood and bone infections, pneumonia and meningitis.

Is it serious?

Yes. Hib meningitis has a 5% fatality rate with 25% of these cases causing permanent damage. However, the Hib bacteria usually doesn't travel to blood stream and instead stays within an infected person's nose, mouth or ears and symptoms resemble the common cold. Treatment includes heavy antibiotics, which normally wipes out infection with only rare cases causing permanent damage.

Is it common?

No. We see about 25 cases annually and most in children under the age of 5. Minor Hib infections may be more common but we don't know since most people won't get help for it since it resembles so closely the common cold. Keep in mind that before the vaccine was created in the eighties, Hib was quite common with 20,000 serious cases reported annually.

Is the vaccine controversial?

The PedVaxHib brand contains 1/1000 of a milligram of aluminum. Aluminum in larger doses may cause damage to the human body. Overall, this vaccine has some of the lowest number of side effects when compared with other vaccines.

Mama Natural's take:

Although serious, Hib is quite rare in the U.S. ... thanks in large part to vaccines. Since Griffin is breastfed and not in daycare, we didn't feel he needed this vaccine. There is also the antibiotic treatment that is usually effective. However, if Mike and I travel to the developing world while Griffin is young, we would probably vaccinate him.

  • What about peoople traveling to our country and bringing the disease to us? I feel if too many people stop vaccinating, the diseases can experience a comeback and end up claiming lives like they used to back years ago

  • The reason why it's rare in occurrence is because we vaccinate. I would love to hear your comments and opinions on the recent measles outbreaks happening around the country.

  • Remember kids, viruses are part of the natural world too!

  • I'm afraid of the same thing TheLadyShred is. Herd immunity is going to disappear

  • So your saying not to vaccinate because herd immunity will protect your son.. Well that only works until people start taking your advice and then hardly anybody has immunity, so the disease makes a comeback. Or until its brought in from overseas.

  • Very informative series, for an audience who lives mostly in the US or Canada. Unfortunately as an American living in south america, I'm in that part of the story where you'd say "... If we travel internationally..."

    :(

  • If we don't vaccinate our children, the number of cases reported will go up. All of these vaccines were created and administered for a reason. I spent a lot of time in the hospital as a child and I would rather get my baby vaccinated than watch him or her get really sick from something I could have helped prevent.

  • Really enjoy this series. Informative and the pros and cons are explained very clearly.

  • What are your thoughts on the Vitamin K shot at birth?

  • I really like your show, but in a lot of your vaccination video's I noticed that you would reconsider the vaccination if you chose to travel in the future. My question is: is there a time frame in which you can no longer get the vaccine? What if you don't travel while Griffin in living with you, but when he moves out he decides to travel? Let me know what your take is.
