Hello. Sort of an update on a LCD TV I am repairing during my spare time, but this is mostly a quick visual run of how to use an oscilloscope/function generator for the same purpose as an ESR meter. I followed a very similar setup to what is described on this guys page: http://fullnet.com/~tomg/esrscope.htm

For those who care, the board I am troubleshooting right now is a DSP:
Insignia 782.26HA37-690E

However, after quite a bit of searching, I have found that this board is almost identical to both Insignia DSP 6HA0136910-12V-LH32 and Vizio DSP 569HA0969E

any questions/Comments?

  • If the capacitor in question had a short fault, this method would show the cap was working correctly. You'd need to run a continuity test to be able to check for a short fault. Note that my method here is dependent upon the frequency sent to the tested capacitor. For example, with the two 10,000uF caps I have, they should show up with an impedance of 1/((2*pi*100kHz)*10,000uF)=0.000159ohms, or practically a short. However, this test would not work with low values of capacitance.

  • sorry man, I myself am simply an amateur myself when it comes to circuit repair, but I know that those values will vary from make and manufacturer of the component in question. I would possibly suggest a quick Google search for a datasheet

  • Would this work if the capacitor had a "short" Fault?

  • nice hat

  • Very good demo.

In the 70's QST, Ham Radio Mag, had a simple circuit they called the Octopus. Instead of using a sq gen, they used a voltage dropping transformer and a few resistors. This hooked to a scope & produced a vertical line when shorted, a horiz line open and an L line through a transistor junction.

    Here is a link w w w .qsl.net/kd7rem/pdf/octopus.pdf

Was very good for cap test creating a circle or oval.

  • The Analyzer gives both Capacitance and ESR.

  • Im trying to do lcd monitor repairs from home but im a bit confused as to what is an acceptable ESR level? I am using a Peak Atlas Component Analyzer to measure with.
