On June 25th 2010, Toronto Chief of Police Bill Blair announces that police have been given new power under the Public Works Protection Act.

According to Chief Blair the new law empowers police to arrest anyone within 5 meters of the G20 security zone who refuses to identify themselves or agree to a police search. The penalty is a $500 fine or 2 months in prison.

On June 25th, Maude Barlow and the Council of Canadians
protest the new law and measure the 5 meter distance from the fence.

On June 28th 2010, Toronto Chief of Police Bill Blair admits that he had been lying. The police did not have new powers to demand ID and search people.

That did not stop police from enforcing a law that didn't exist for three days...

Police openly violate peoples rights and then wonder why protesters are pissed off at them?

  • When the police become the criminals, who will investigate the police?

  • @ProjectBurncan while you have a point, however the nature of this display of police power is portentous of things to come. how do you see things continuing beyond the G20? are you aware of the use of police provocateurs? will CCTV presence be removed? What if "the public works act" is imposed under different circumstances? or do these questions not occur to you? to me the G20 was reminiscent of a police state. my questions are not baseless. there is precedence on this subject.

  • @darktoadthesticky when they become criminals? . . . they are already past that point.

  • GREAT VIDEO. YOU "WE THE PEOPLE" ARE TRUE AMERICANS HERO`S !!

  • dumbass cops have their friends undercovr burning cars and breaking stuff and meanwhile they make this fuss...holy crap Canada is much different then when I left 10 years ago...for worse!!!!

  • @maddooggg no you just should be sucking the cops dick

  • 25th was my birthday :D!

  • all those freaks who prefer to be confrontational with the police should be in boot camp

  • @newguy33X "Yes, I see those people going down the street in a peaceful protest, and I chose to walk near them to go home instead of standing and waiting for you to give me permission after an indeterminate amount of time. I have assessed the danger for myself, and I don't think there is enough to cost me possibly hours of my life."

  • @maddooggg You can definitely be too cautious. It all costs money and time. They shut down Bay street at some points, suspended trading. They spent ridiculous amounts of taxpayer money on all of this. Can they say they prevented a billion dollars of damage? At some point you have to let adults make the decision to go about their lives, with the adults knowing the world isn't 100% safe, and trust that the vast majority aren't out to make trouble. My friend should have been able to say ...

  • @newguy33X you can never be too cautious.. again the screening the public for weapons should never be frowned upon. theyre damned if they do and damned if they dont. there will always be those who want to challenge authority. i dont hate the police or interfere with them or question their existence and actions. like i said @ 3:12 thru 3:22 sums it up. its just rediculous when folks get upset over that.

  • @maddooggg How could you not wonder when there are dozens across the street from your building, standing ready to take out people for basically sitting around in a park? Oh yes, those people needed protection (rolls eyes) to sit in a park, not bothering anyone. It would also be a horrible security scandal to let a yuppy in a shirt and tie continue on home. If it were literally in your backyard, you would have a problem with it too.
