Back in 2006, fast street trucks were declining in popularity -- but off-road sports were growing.
00:00:10.000
Ford's Special Vehicle Team -- made a decision. Their top-secret fast truck project would meet a niche need.
00:00:15.000
There hasn't been a factory-built desert race truck -- until now.
00:00:20.000
This -- is the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. Every vent carved into the lightweight sheet-molded composite hood and fenders -- works to cool components during race conditions.
00:00:25.000
Though the Raptor is seven inches wider than a normal F-150, the Raptor's off-road gear weighs only 200 pounds more than a similarly equipped FX4.
00:00:30.000
Precision-built specialty parts from innovative suppliers make the Raptor a rolling showcase of the best desert-conquering technology.
00:00:35.000
Eck Industries once supplied lightweight engine blocks for the Ford GT supercar. Now, they supply textured running boards designed to redirect rocks aimed at the Raptor's rear fenders.
00:00:40.000
Special tread blocks, belt angles, and belt plies help the custom BF Goodrich tires traverse mud and snow.
00:00:45.000
But the Raptor's best technology is hidden behind each wheel. Its advanced long-travel suspension was engineered just hours north of the legendary Baja 1000 race.
00:00:50.000
Mountainbike innovator Fox Racing Shox uses a patented series of internal check valves to provide low amplitude damping on asphalt, and more rugged rates during severe service..
00:00:55.000
The oil inside just one Fox Racing shock costs more than an entire conventional shock assembly. Each shock is rendered in precision-machined aircraft aluminum with anodized blue accents.
00:01:00.000
These state-of-the-art shocks are manufactured in California and shipped to Michigan for installation in each SVT Raptor.
00:01:05.000
Off-roaders -- have a love and hate relationship with technology. Electronic assistants are notorious for diluting imperative raw feel off-road.
00:01:10.000
The Raptor has its share of gadgetry, but SVT worked to give drivers complete control over the Raptor's electronics.
00:01:15.000
An "Off-Road Mode" button recalibrates the Engine Control Unit, transmission shift points, and anti-lock braking algorithms to sharpen the truck off-road -- instead of dulling its responses.
00:01:20.000
If you consider stability control to be a fun-governor, don't worry -- it can be fully defeated by holding one button.
00:01:25.000
The rear differential can be electronically locked in Two High, Four High, and Four Low modes -- to top speed. No other off-roader has that capability.
00:01:30.000
Four pre-wired auxiliary toggle switches complete the Raptor's smart suite.
00:01:35.000
The Raptor's most alluring victory is its everyday livability. A truck with this level of capability should not be streetable, but it is -- and it's an overachiever.
00:01:40.000
In tight paved corners, the Raptor's steering rack delivers delicious metallic feedback directly from the steering fork and front suspension.
00:01:45.000
It's a sensation I can only compare to shifter karts and the 1992 Suzuki Swift GTi. You have to drive this truck to understand.
00:01:50.000
Its fashion-forward interior is rendered in auspicious textures and colors. Each panel is assembled to tolerances that European brands sometimes can't achieve.
00:01:55.000
Ford's SVT Raptor isn't just a design story, a rock crawler, or a quick truck.
00:02:00.000
Because the Raptor is so versatile, it's validating for muddy Bronco owners and supercharged Lightning fans alike.
