Oregon State University Professor of Anthropology Dr. David Brauner and 26 of his students are getting the scoop on Champoeg history, and you can see it revealed.

Join a guided tour beginning at 10 a.m. on:

Wednesdays - July 6, 13, 20, 27 & Aug. 3
Fridays - July 8, 15, 22, 29
Saturdays - July 16, 23, 30

Tours begin in the Riverside day-use parking area near the Pioneer Mothers Cabin. The tours are free, but a $5 day-use parking fee applies.

This is Brauner's fourth excavation of the townsite. Earlier digs showed that French Canadian and American trappers lived at the site since the early 1830s. Fragments of glass and ceramics were found in later digs, identified as pieces from plates, bowls, cups and bottles. Additional artifacts included pieces of broken clay smoking pipes, and metal objects such as nails. Also found were pieces of wood and animal bones, buttons, beads, a tin can (possibly the oldest in the Pacific Northwest), and several small brass straight pins.
