During the Atlantic City airshow, three USCG helicopters came by to show the spectators how they would go about saving someone either on a stricken vessel, or in the water. First the helo comes in low at 10 feet and 10 knots, slowing to 0 knots. After the rescue swimmer jumps out, they back off on the hover so the downwash doesnt prevent them from working. When its time to pick them up, a cable hoist is dropped down that the swimmer will hook around themselves or the victim so they can be hauled to safety.
I've been fascinated by helicopters ever since I was a kid. Of course I'd probably NEVER ride in one because I'm afraid of heights!! But,I do love looking at them flying around in the sky!!
