Hrastovlje is a siding on the so-called Koper line, a 30 miles long single track line which connects the Slovenian Port of Koper on the Adriatic Sea with the double track "Southern Line" that runs from Trieste via Sežana, Ljubljana, and Maribor to Vienna. This is an extremely difficult route which in 25 miles rises from the sea level to the altitude 550 m / 1,800' in the series of grades from 2.5 to 2.7%. Helpers are needed on all but the lightest trains, not just because of the power but also because of the safety reasons. They leave the trains on the fly at Rodik siding, the highest point on the line.
