  • Looks like a fun project. I bet the kids love them. How much does that gouge weigh?

    Leonard

  • @MrLeonard55 You're right, the kids really seem to enjoy them (adults too, lol). I never weighed the gouge. I made a 16" handle for it out of Mahogany which is fairly light. It's got excellent balance and is a joy to use. Thanks for your comment.

  • Those big gouges are a treat to use! I had always thought they would only be useful for massive turnings, but they're more useful than that by far!

I personally like to grind the wings back on mine about 1/8" to 3/16", just so they're not so straight up.

One major advantage to that, as well as the large radius, is you can use the tool on an angle to get a cut almost like you would with a skew. You can actually get a really good finish once you get used to cutting like that.

  • @gmertl Cant Wait!

  • @mykmykmykkk Since I got it, I find it's become my "go-to" gouge for roughing. Big or small project doesn't matter. I can rough it down in no time. If you get the chance, try one. Bet you'll love it.

    Regards, Gary
