In 1964 Treasure Chest Magazine, a comic book distributed in Catholic grade schools, predicted and suggested that a black man (a Negro as they termed him) be elected in 1976.

It was called "1976 Pettigrew for President."

Here are some of the panels from the multi-part story which ran from January to June 1964.

  • i dont like the music. its like circus music.

  • It is J.S Bach.

  • whoever does the music, its creepy. it brings back terrible childhood memories of me being scared shitless by a clown. seriously clowns scare me more than any fictional monster. have u ever seen It by steven king? but anyways im meandering of topic. hurray for the first black president. boo for the circus.

  • The music is from the popular 60's album "Switched on Bach."

Sorry if it brings back bad memories. I don't like circuses either, but for other reasons.

  • Walter/Wendle Carlos music?

  • The text isn't quite accurate... "Pettigrew"is NOT the first Black Presidential candidate. There have been MANY... minor party and independents.

It would be more accurate to say that he's the first with MAJOR PARTY backing.

  • Funny because my name is Timothy Pettigrew. Yeaaaaa!!!!

  • Thanks for posting the end of the story. I have some of the earlier chapters, but that last issue has eluded me. "1976: Pettigrew for President" was a very informative story about the election process. What first drew me to it was the amazing artwork by Joe Sinnott, who inked most of the classic Jack Kirby issues of THE FANTASTIC FOUR in the '60s. (And for fellow Silver Age Marvel fans, Pettigrew also featured a Jasper Sitwell lookalike.) -- Gary P.

  • cool

  • Well, kinda interesting. Walter/Wendy. I bought the Walter Carlos LP. Then I got the Wendy Carlos CD. Is this music somewhat prophetic? Will we have a GLBT President this century? Eh?

  • I had this comic too, being a good Catholic school kid. And I kept it. And I looked at it during the primary and I looked at it again the next morning after Nov 4, 2008 (I was at the Grant Park, you betcha!).

And I am smiling right now as I write this!!! In fact, I still can't believe it. It will be so cool on 20-Jan-09. I am waiting for 12:01pm that day, baby. Time can't go fast enough.
