@yorgle11 I agree totally, the Mustang II was not one of Fords better ideas in the mid and late 1970's. But even a Mercury clone to the Mustang II wouldn't have been nearly as ridiculous or insulting to the buying public as the Cimmaron. The Cougars of 77-79 were popular for good reason although I wasn't a fan of tacking the proud Cougar name on a station wagon version.
@talonsbrutus It was a good move really. In the post-emissions 70s there wasn't much point having a Mercury version of the "Mustang II", which was a pretty marginal car. I dare say it would have ended up as dumb as a Cadillac Cimmaron.
Mercury's image fits the "personal luxury" concept a lot better than it does muscle cars. I like Thunderbirds but for some emotional reason the Mercury version is more appealing, just because the Mercury brand wears that style of car so well. :)
@talonsbrutus Ford Motor Co saw the tremendous success of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo and decided to make the Cougar a personal luxury car beginnng with the 1974 model year.

I used to love to watch Ms. Fawcett in this commercial. I was 15. Thanks for posting!

R.I.P. Farrah. The first female image I ever became "excited" by as a young boy :-)
