At Arch Coal, we know that prevention and preparation are critical to an effective safety program. Our national network of mines engages employees in prevention through behavior-based safety programs and emergency preparedness through all-hands Mine Emergency Response Drills (MERD). In this video, witness the 2011 MERD hosted at Mountain Coal's West Elk mine in Colorado. The eight-hour search and rescue exercise involved roughly 200 federal and state officials, miners, local law enforcement, emergency responders and other personnel. Employees from eight states participated in the mock safety drill in various capacities, including mine rescuers, family and media relations personnel and performance evaluators.
