Basking sharks Cetorhinus maximus are the second biggest fish in the world. In the summer months they are regular visitors to the Irish Sea; however they are rarely encountered in close proximity to people. Basking Sharks are protected in UK territorial waters and are list as vulnerable on the IUCN red data list. These gentle giants were seen off the Isle of Man by the Countryside Council for Wales Marine Monitoring Team whilst involved in collaborative scientific work with the Isle of Man Government.
