Test to see how the AI works with a bit of cover and obstruction.
These were subsequent sessions, filmed one after the other, and not cherrypicked. To be honest, I´m really in love with BIS and Arma, but as a Gamer I sometimes think they´re not on top of their game, or at least distinctly overwhelmed with the task their own game Idea set them.
Somebody said they didn´t use cover at all, and because I always find it tedious to test that in the actual environment, I built this maze, also for repeatabillity. It clearly shows the AI using and moving from cover to cover, suppressing the enemy and using handgrenades to good effect.
The AI was forced to skill and precision setting 1 via the config. In the first couple of tests, AI with skill slider set to medium were used. In the later tests, default fireteams were used (with one team member of the russian team removed, as it is made up of 5 instead of 4 members.).
My Conclusion is that the AI is performing okay in relatively dense environments, such as fields with treelines and fences, small and relatively open villages, or moderately thick forests. In Urban environments, though, they are inadequate. A big issue, my guess is, will be friendly fire when running this test on a larger scale. That the AI also ignores buildings (even though they can climb ladders now in v. 1.05), can´t anticipate enemy movement, can´t plot cohesive movements and is completely reckless in its movements doesn´t help either.
Taking cover and such is nice, though... What the AI needs is fear (the 50 % casualty morale drop doesn´t really count here), anticipative skills, better trigger discipline and more rational exploitation of cover. If I´d be crazy I´d also ask for lateral thinking skills, a default abillity to back up friendly units in distress, the abillity to set up ambushes and pre-plan attacks without use of waypoints, etc, etc...
But I´d be happy if the rough edges would be cleaned up: more careful rounding of corners, less friendly fire incidents, faster target aquisition and better planning of movement.. I´d even be okay if the old OFP AI-can-shoot-you-trough-ten-buildings bug would be brought back as a price for it: just make the AI more coherent, careful and capable in Urban environments.
Otherwise the Urban combat that will most likely come in Operation Arrowhead will turn out to be a disappointment.
exit stage, right :D
