The Piston Horn Quartet performing at the debut of "Beer & Baroque" at Berkeley's Pyramid Alehouse. These talented musicians also perform with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. From L-R Alexandra Cook, Paul Avril, John Boden, and R. J. Kelley with guest artist Fred Holmgren.

  • @pduffy4 The vales are certainly different from my teacher's horn. His had some kind of rotary valve.

  • I believe these are called French Horns. My music teacher when I was in school played one.

  • So, it is how horn should really sound! Well, I understand in attempt to play accurately all this orchestral repertoire, one can rely on the modern instrument, but as the focus goes on, less and less real horn sound is important any more, and to remind, we play horn just for that mellow-brassy-distant sound. I am an amateur but all I enjoy are rare moments when I get that sound in one, two slurred notes at the most. Thank you very much for this beautiful performance. (who wrote this piece?)
