Next time you go to downiville RIDE THE EMPIRE CREEK TRAIL. The outfitters will know what it is. I've ridden it with greg all the way from the shop around the whole loop. It's the only trail I liked better than the haypress creek trail and the Hilda mine trail.

i haven't been to downieville in two years, to the best of my knowledge its the longest, farthest and looses more elevation gain than any other trail on the west coast... Is there less pedaling on the 3rd divide?

$60 to $80 depending on the bike. $60 gets you a bike that retails for $2500

got any advice on good places to go in downieville if i only have a hardtail?

Nope. It's totally worth getting a full suspension bike for the ride (you can rent them in town). The difference is speed. You can do DVille on a hardtail, but you just have to go slow, so it's not as much fun.
