Canne de Combat - which simply means Cane Fighting - is a French art with, perhaps, some other European influences. This version is the sport art, rather than how one might use a stick for self-defence in the street... Needless to say, it is not difficult to adapt the strikes and include thrusts when needing to keep 'angry dogs at bay'

  • We will be hosting the European Canne de Combat Championships in Cambridge (UK) on the first weekend in September (4+5th) 2010 — should you be interested in coming along to see this sport performed at the very highest level.

  • I see a huge problem with the lunging ankle strike. If you lunge in like that you leave your skull WIDE open. It would be far too easy for an opponent(with a bat or similar weapon) to perform a crushing strike from above. Hit the ankle, get your skull crushed. That is just ridiculous, especially with your free hand BEHIND YOU. If you aren't going to use it you might as well tape it to your face. At least then it could block a face strike! :D

  • It's a sport - not a martial art. Although there is a street fight self defence variant of the system in existence which I teach here in Cambridge UK. Going back to your comment: As in the sport of Fencing, there are certain rules. If your opponent drops low for a strike to the lower leg you can of course counter-strike to his head. There is, however, a requirement to block his attack, or remove your leg first. Plus you have to deliver your strike in the correct manner - not just slash downwards

  • I don't care for sports such as fencing, but I do see your point. I was just speaking from a practical standpoint. If it's just a sport, then yes, let there be rules. :)

  • @parahumanoid You're right.

The art in martial arts describes people's desire to polish skill to perfection. Art doesn't imply irrational. At all.

  • @skooterkid The art in martial arts describes people's desires to go beyond what is strictly practical, which in turn benefits what is strictly practical. The choice of the word art is no accident.

Oh really? And who told you that? You've been seriously misled.

If fact, the key word in "Martial Arts" is "Martial," meaning military.

The word, art, in this sense pretty much always just means style, or system. It's vague, unlike the word, martial, which is very specific. Martial=Military=Combat, it all means the same thing and is the very original purpose of all true martial arts.

  • @skooterkid Key word in martial arts is art.

  • regarding the lunge to the ankle, many martial styles do this. There are many reasons for it that I won't get into. But besides, just watch some of the many stick fights from various styles and see it performed pretty often and with results. The same argument could be made for the wrestling lunge which is often successful as well. I will admit this technique would not be my first choice, but it can be accomplished...hence the need for training and skill.
