@rossaust My father set up the Pembroke Dock Ground Crew Association which is still going strong with many members who were on ground crew and flew with and on the Sunderlands flying out of PD in the 1950's. Beautiful planes, have sat on a restored ones wing and been in the craft when the engines were first started, wow what a beast.
Thanks, a wonderful display. Sadly there are very few of these boats around the world now. Sold for GBP300.00 after WW2, most went for scrap. Last two in Australia flew to Lord Howe Island, finishing in the 70's. One went to the caribbean and flew on, and it's fellow, wrecked was later restored and is in Florida where it still flies rarely. RNZAF flew them operationally till the 50'sr. One is being restored for static display in NZ. Check out Pembroke Dock Trust Museum site (UK) for more info.
I was a member of the RAF section of my school's CCF, In the early 1950's I flew in Sunderlands from RAF Pembroke Dock. On one occasion we landed at Milford Haven, cooked our meal in the galley and sat on the wings - in glorious sunshine - and ate our gourmet meal!
Very cool
