Teach For America is a non-profit organization that trains college graduates to teach in poor areas across the U.S. and the rewards benefit both the students and the teachers. Russ Mitchell reports.
@Pukkpukkpukk I don't know if you really understand what the purpose of Teach for America is. The two year commitment is a way that these individuals get to learn about how life is like in poor community. If they go into something other than education, then it will most likely be something related where they are trying to fix the inequity in education in an indirect way. As for taking jobs, if there wasn't a need for these teachers, then this program wouldn't exist.
These teachers come into the profession with 5 weeks of preparation and take jobs from graduates that have completed long intensive teacher preparation programs. These teachers are given a two year contract while recent graduates of state teacher programs are given year to year contracts. I wonder how many continue in education after their two years are up, it seems that schools would reap greater rewards hiring teachers who are looking for long term commitments.
