SP 4449 after waiting for a BNSF freight to clear Flathead Tunnel, begins the journey into the 7 mile long tunnel at mile post 1264.6 on the BNSF Railway Kootenai River Subdivision. About half way thru the tunnel, the Amtrak HEP power generator shut down, and the car lights went to emergency backup power. Probable cause, lack of oxygen in the tunnel from the steam locomotive.
