For some odd reason, my Slash 4x4 developed a problem with the VLX3 motor system today....

As you can see in the vdeo, at part throttle, it makes a high pitched whining sound and the motor sounds like the internals are spinning when the rotor shaft isn't.

When I give it more throttle, it eventually gets going, but it still makes a high pitched whine and the motor gets hot very quickly....

  • Idiot change teeth on gears

  • @steelerkiller100

Umm, idiot, READ through some of the replies and maybe you'll realize it had NOTHING to do with the gear teeth.

  • I just got the same problem today. Magnet unglued...Can I fix this myself or....?

  • @TheFr1ch

Some have epoxied theirs with good results, but I would either send it back to Traxxas for a replacement or buy a replacement rotor.

Reason being if it's not glued evenly, it will spin out of balance and possibly shatter at high RPM's, causing even bigger problems.

  • @98snakeeater is there an upgraded rotor so this doesnt happen again? or would you have to buy a upgraded motor?

  • @TheFr1ch

AFAIK, Traxxas offers only one rotor replacement kit for this motor.

  • @imasuper0308 I think this fault is quite common, this video's from May 2010. I have a brand new Slash "Ultimate" and after only about 20 minutes of running (it was the 2nd time I had it out) on a flat concrete pad the motor's internals let go.

I'm an engineer and looking at this motor I can't see how Traxxas intends for the heat to dissipate, it should AT LEAST have a ribbed motor casing to increase the surface area (like fins on an air cooled engine). These motors can do over 1 kilowatt!!!

  • @warren52nz The guy at Traxxas said "he has never seen that happen before". So I wonder how common this is. I was running 3S lipo and was slamming pretty hard on pavement for quite a bit. What I don't know is if this was a fluke or if it is going to happen again on the new motor they are sending me since nothing will be different. I don't want to be using fans & heatsinks if I don't have to. Hmm.

  • @imasuper0308 I'm convinced it's a heat problem. I got a new motor and took a heatsink from a computer CPU, curved it to fit on the motor (wasn't as hard as I thought) cut out a big notch to go around the 3 wires and cable-tied it to the motor.

Went out with an infrared thermometer and blasted around a concrete pad for 10 minutes and measured a peak temperature of about 90°C which is pretty close to the max Traxxas recommends. So put a small fan on it too. Haven't re-tested yet.

  • @warren52nz Yea I've got 2 batteries through it since new and my motor just fried. It melted the center wire clean off. Ug.

  • Yea my motor is doing this as well and I've only had it a couple days. I'm running 3S lipo. Now when I press trigger forwards the tires run backwards. The motor got so hot the middle wire melted right off of it. Lame! What motor should I replace it with? I thought it was the clutch at first too but then you look at it and the motor isn't even spinning when it makes the screeeetching sound. Ug. Isn't this thing supposed to be rated for 3S?
