Hagia Sophia: the First Christian Cathedral and Islam Pt.1

This is an excellent presentation of Constantine the Greats excellent monument to a newly empowered Christian world, now the official religion of the Roman empire. The grandeur and architectural structure of the cathedral are amply illustrated through Erbys detailed examinations of buttresses and all of it. The history during the Ottoman Empire is also fascinating as the cathedral recovers from years of neglect and intentional damage. The move is on now to turn it from Kemals museum to a church again. Not only the Blue and Suleyman Mosques owe much of their inspiration to this Hagia Sophia cathedral. Hagia Sophia represents both the triumph of the Church through persecution, but also the downturn as it becomes an instrument of empire. What would Jesus say?

Lovely video, should really be pronounced Ayia Sofia, the g is like an english y. the first letter is silent. It's East Roman, or Orthodox, Greek words, in Greek means 'Holy Wisdom'

The Hagia Sophia was hardly the "First Christian Cathedral" since the current structure was not consecrated until A.D. 537 and even the first church built in that location was not dedicated until A.D. 360, centuries after the Church had established the episcopal system with the "kathedra" as the seat of the Bishop.

Constantinople itself didn't even exist until A.D. 330, some three centuries after the beginning of the Church and wasn't recognized by Rome as a patriarchate until the 5th century.
