When these large boxes, covered by tarpaulin and guarded day and night turned up in the rear area those in the know were told to refer to them as tanks to make the enemy think that that's what they were- large metal water tanks. It was just a ruse but the name stuck. Almost nobody called them "land-battleships" except in the press after the secret was out, "landship" was the more common term.

No doubt you'll reply with "it has no turret, it's a TD etc" It's still an armoured, tracked and armed fighting vehicle, not unlike the British Mark 1 from 1916 were we get the name "tank" from. (I'm assuming you know the story behind the name?) That didn't have a turret either. Or look at the Swedish S-tank.
