@lesscowbell1 Bamboo is used in china as scaffolding for buildings.
Now I don't know about those budding baby bamboo shoots but it's pretty tough!

bamboos are not trees, they are grass. they come from the grass species.

hmmm...I would think that the slightest shifting of the body would would break up the budding material protruding the soil. So if the subject were to fidget just a bit every once in a while I would guess that the bamboo would have to swerve around the body....any botanists take on that?

The Myth is even more gruesome than that! The victim would be tied to a chair, with a hole in the buttom, and placed ontop of a fast growing sprout. Thus slowley being EMPALED by a growing Bamboo, as it grow through your intesten, stopping at nothing!! imagne that. But the conclusion is the same. It could be a plausible and very effective way to get people to talk/ kill them.

They never worked out how sharp bamboo is compared to the spike and the dummy was translucent, allowing sunlight to pass through it.
