The Group Hooligan performs a medley of "The Blacksmith" and "Kid on the Mountain" during the 2010 Florida Renaissance Festival at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Filmed live on Feb 13, 2010.

Featuring Billy Miller on guitar and lead vocals, Charlie Rafferty (aka "Rafferty The Piper") on the Irish Uilleann pipes and supporting vocals, and Misti Bernard on tin whistle and supporting vocals.

"The Blacksmith" is a traditional English folk song, that is known to have at least two different tunes and several different lyrics variants (with Hooligan playing the more common variant here). It is also known as "A Blacksmith Courted Me". It is archived as "Roud 816" in the Roud Folk Song Index. The song was noted down by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1909 from a Mrs Powell. On that occasion it was sung to the tune "Monk's Gate", better known as the tune of "To be a pilgrim", the hymn by John Bunyan. "The Blacksmith" has been recorded many times by various artists over the years, including The Critics Group, Shirley Collins, Steeleye Span, Planxty, Loreena McKennitt, and many others, including Hooligan.

"The Kid on the Mountain" is a widely known and very popular Irish slip jig. It can be found recorded on almost innumerable albums by a bewilderingly diverse array of artists and instruments. Slip jigs such as this are noted for their use of 9/8 meter.

================
lyrics to "The Blacksmith":

A blacksmith courted me
Nine months and better
He fairly won my heart
Wrote me a letter.
With his hammer in his hand
He looked so clever
And if I was with my love
I would live forever.

But where is my love gone
With his cheeks like roses
And his good black Billycock on
Decked around with primroses.
I fear the shining sun
May burn and scorch his beauty
And if I was with my love
I would do my duty.

Strange news is come to town
Strange news is carried
Strange news flies up and down
That my love is married.
I wish them both much joy
Though they can't hear me
And may God reward him well
For the slighting of me.

Don't you remember when
You lay beside me
And you said you'd marry me
And not deny me.
If I said I'd marry you
It was only for to try you
So bring your witness love
And I'll not deny you.

No, witness have I none
Save God Almighty
And may he reward you well
For the slighting of me.
Her lips grew pale and wan
It made a poor heart tremble
To think she loved a one
And he proved deceitful.

A blacksmith courted me
Nine months and better
He fairly won my heart
Wrote me a letter.
With his hammer in his hand
He looked so clever
And if I was with my love I would live forever.
