The Velvet Angels were a spin off from Nolan Strong & The Diablos. Members were Jay Johnson, Willie Hunter, Cy Iverson and Bobby Calhoun. All their recordings seem to have been taken from a variety of practice tapes. On some of the recordings attributed to them. the voice of Nolan Strong can also be heard.
"I'm In Love" was one side of their first 45 from 1964. The version here is an alternate take that appears on the CD.

  • @20FlightBlues...yes the original recording was taken from rehearsal tapes done in their hotel room. The version I'm playing was a studio cut, so the audio is a little better.

  • This is real smooth Doo Wopp.

    GREAT POST

  • @hubiethesaint ...yep...smooth as "Velvet"....this tune knocked me out when I first heard it many years ago.

  • Professional! streetcorner singers. Thanks for posting this great song.

  • @BobbyDelRiv , @sjaeg

Thanks again folks....love the sound of "'pure" Street Corner style Acappella harmony.....and the Velvet Angels delivered the goods !

  • You're quite welcome....but Nope......I'm not from Detroit. I discovered the Diablos/Velvet Angels in the early 60's when I was living in the metro NYC area. Eventually I met, and became friends with Jay Johnson, bass from both groups. I've even performed with him for shows on a few occasions, doing both Diablos & Velvet Angels' material.
